5 Fun Summertime Activities to Enjoy in Cambridge
Winters in Boston can be tough, but we pay our dues for 6-months of the year because Summers in Massachusetts are simply glorious. There’s nothing but sun in the 617 forecast, so get outside, soak up some Vitamin D and take advantage of the area’s best summertime activities! Here are some fun events to add to your calendar:
Berklee Summer Concert Series
If you own a home or rent an apartment in Kendall Square, you’re just a few steps away from one of Cambridge’s most entertaining summer events. The Berklee Summer Concert Series takes place every Thursday at noon and 5pm through August 30th, and features Berklee College of Music students of varying genres. Berklee is a world-renowned college for musicians, so the high-caliber performers are sure to impress! For lunchtime entertainment head to the courtyard of the Marriott Hotel at the entrance to the Kendall Square T stop and for post-work festivities take a stroll over to North Plaza (evening concerts move to Tuesdays starting on August 7th). Either location is just a short walk from Proto Kendall Square, the newest luxury apartment building in Kendall Square.
After enjoying Sunday brunch at one of Cambridge’s many delectable restaurants, head over to Central Square for some vintage finds at the neighborhood’s sprawling flea market. There you’ll find local art from local artists, classic records and eye catching fashions that are sure to spark some nostalgia. The market runs from 11am – 5pm on Sundays, and takes place in University Park this year. After you work up an appetite, celebrate your flea market finds with a tasty meal at one of the local food trucks in the area.
Summer in the City
The City of Cambridge and Cambridge Community Foundation celebrate summer with music, dance, storytelling, theater, puppetry, movies and more. This free event offers multicultural, interactive art programs and performances both day and night for guests of all ages. You can find a full list of artists and events at www.cambridgema.gov/arts/Programs/summerinthecity.
The Charles River
On the hottest of days there’s nothing quite like a leisurely paddle down the Charles River. This urban river is one-of-a-kind, and for those that want to spend their summer days exploring all it has to offer, there’s an affordable seasonal pass from Charles River Canoe & Kayak, which offers unlimited access to any water craft for the entire day, all summer long.
Moves On The Roof
Most rental buildings like Proto Kendall Square have apartment building amenities that help their residents stay active and fit, but if you want to mix it up a bit and make some new friends while you get your sweat on, Moves On The Roof is a fun (and free!) way to do it. Every Tuesday from July 10-September 25, classes are provided by InnerCity Weightlifting and Health Yoga Life on the Kendall Square Roof Garden. Classes are from 6-7pm so it’s a perfect way to decompress after a day at work or school.
Cambridge is a city full of life and energy, especially in the summer months. In addition to these events and activities there are walking and biking tours, parks, art walks, historic sights and landmarks and of course the fun you’ll find in any of Cambridge’s dynamic squares. Whether you live in one of the many beautiful Cambridge apartments or homes or you’re just visiting for the day, be sure to make the most of all this special city has to offer.
